This post is definitely OS X-centric, but I would love the ideas to apply for Windows people too. I don't have a copy of Windows 7, but it seems like things haven't changed that much in the last decade (which is both a good thing and a bad thing). Take a look at some of these links, because you might be able to use a similar approach (i.e. for the visually impaired) to TTS a PDF:

Configure TTS:
http://support.microsoft.com/k...

General info about the MS TTS subsystem:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M...

Info about Narrator:
http://windows.microsoft.com/e...

The general idea is that any PDF reader (acrobat, whatever) can be used to read and highlight the words, but the trick is to make the computer treat you like you're blind. If you can get that far, then hopefully it will be possible to get the MS TTS subsystem to read fast enough that it's a speed improvement.

...but if you have any luck, please let us know how you were able to get it working.

Re: A better way to read - Ian Dennis Miller

Hm... btw, to convert pdfs to text, are any of your resources available for Windows 7 as well (or any other ones)? I looked and a .dmg file is not recognized by my cpu and homebrew refers to OS X... Thanks much!
Jonathan C.

Re: A better way to read - Ian Dennis Miller

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA In love with your intro. I saw the commercial, and instantly, I thought Aww! Those are so cute! Like everyone else. I wished they were real, I wanted them to be. I did lots of research, people saying they weren't real. Until I found that website you are advertising on your blog. I was like, OH MY GAWD! I saw the "Live" webcam. I hadn't payed a lot of attention about that. I'd started realizing it WAS NOT real. For example, when I clicked About Me, I read the stuff about health. "Health problems: none. They are the best." That set it off for me, really. No animal has no health problems. Every. Single. Animal. Has. Health. Problems. That was my evidence numero uno..

"We are expecting baby from Vladimir and Raina in approximately 156 days. This baby reserved by prince for birthday gift. If you are interested in having own petite lap giraffe please sign waitlist." I clicked "I want giraffe" Because, like everyone else, I wanted one of them. I thought after I clicked it, it would tell me informations. Prices, ect. I clicked, and it says, "Congrats! You have been added to the wait list.. I thought, do they even cost anything?! No contact info, that made me worried. At that point I realized they weren't real. I did find a number, however. And I called. It didn't ring once, an automated voice said, this number is no longer.. blah blah. I crushed all my friend's and family's hopes and dreams. But then I noticed I hadn't payed any mind to this live webcam feed. I watched it for over four hours, trying to find out whether it was real or not. It's a loop. Every time they want to play a different video in this loop, they have "Lost connection" (If you didn't know, that's what it says. I'm Russian, I can read it :D) then a new video plays. They have a lot of these videos, but after a while, I realized I was seeing the same videos of these "PLGs" over and over..

Crushed me. Hah. I honestly wanted one, I was devoting my entire Sunday to figuring out if these little giraffes were real, and I was totally angry when I figured out they were not. The evidence in your blog is very useful, how they used photoshop with the bath tub picture. Crushed me again. That was the cutest picture ever. Oh well. DirectTV Land is lucky.. They get mini giraffes. :D

Re: Posting this before it&#039s cool: Hipster jokes

If a tree falls in the forest and there's no one around to hear it, will a hipster buy the soundtrack?

Re: Petite Lap Giraffes: Real?

I also noticed something about the webcam: Is is synced up with your time? Because it's 4:15 AM here in Utah... and apparently it's also 4:15 in Russia, too (despite the fact that Google claims the time is different)?

Just thought I'd mention that. XD

Re: Petite Lap Giraffes: Real?

I know they arent real, but I cant help it. Sometimes it is just too fun to believe in something so funny cute and adorable. I cant help but giggle everytime I see them. Commercial or not. Hell they already took Santa, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth fairy from me. Let me just have my wish for a tiny lap giraffe! I watched and studied the live video feed for a long time! There is no loop! I know the pics and directv are fake. But the live video feed is real. It shows detail that perfectly matches the giraffes physics. You may think that it could just be a shrunken video of a giraffe but its not for these reasons.
1) The physics wouldn't be that perfect.
2) The people would have to cut out millions and millions of perfect frames.
3)The video is endless!

Re: When a newspaper "rips off" your blog, then taunts you about it...

I think everyone here would find this to be an interesting read:

The reporter telephoned two principles quoted in my post to verify the information on my blog, and did note that the story had appeared on my blog. The newspaper editor removed the attribution, and inserted "by local blogger." When I confronted the editor, he told me he should have omitted any mention of a blog, because the newspaper had reverified the facts. I suppose they dance around plagiarism, because they can.
